Condos
What you should know before buying
Condominiums are a wonderful, carefree form of home ownership for the right person!
Are you that right person?
Here are a few key questions to ask yourself to see if you are the right person for condo living.
1. Do I want someone else to do all of the landscaping, snow removal and exterior maintenance -or- am I someone who is do-it-yourselfer? Do you really want a full service maintenance company to handle all of the chores at your present residence?
2. Is this a lifestyle decision or a financial one? Your answer here will dictate the type of complex and location that you buy in. I find that people who move into condominiums for financial reasons often move again in a short time. This is okay; however, you should keep this in mind when buying so that you can get your money back out again when you are ready for that second move.
3. Am I the type of person who can delegate the decisions and direction of my property to someone else? Often the hardest part of condo ownership is having to ask permission to improve the outside of “your” property.
4. Will I be away for extended periods of time? The peace of mind from knowing that someone else is watching your home is in itself often worth the price of ownership.
5. Do I want the convenience and added room of a townhouse style unit or am I looking for the security of a high rise apartment unit.
6. Do I want to live in an age, pet or otherwise restricted complex? Ask first to ensure that you don’t have to get rid of your pet or that you won’t have to restrict visits by those under the required age etc.
There are no right or wrong answers to these questions; however, these personal questions must be asked first, before you go on to the next step of looking into the various legal forms of condo ownership.
Condominium ownership is both legally and personally different from owning a house or duplex. It can be either very rewarding, or very frustrating, depending on your personal situation today.
